Central Kalahari game reserve is the second largest game reserve in the world .It covers an area of 52,800 square kilometres. The reserve has a variety of geological formation formed by changing climatic conditions over thousands of years. The okra river, now dry, once fed lake makgadikgadi .Today this ancient fossils river forms a huge and beautiful valley in the southern part of the reserve .Winds blowing through the Kalahari have formed large, sweeping sand dunes that dominate the landscape in the northern part of the reserve.The open grassland that spring to life with the coming of the rains support abundant game and around 42 different species of birds of prey,as well as other bird life.
This region of vast open plains, salt pans and ancient riverbeds is home to large herds of springbok, gemsbok, hartebeest and the largest of all antelope, the eland. Black-mane Kalahari lions African wild dogs, brown hyenas and leopards can also be found following their prey in this untamed wilderness, situated in the centre of Botswana.
